Player Position and Poker
The position of a player in a poker game has got to be one of the most underrated factors of the game. This notion about player position has to change as it is an important factor to consider when utilizing any poker strategy. Position primarily affects the way players must play their hands thereby making player position very influential to virtually any playing style in poker.
Although an important part of game play in poker, player position, to some degree, is much more critical in some game than in others. This is true for variations such as hold 'em, five-card draw, and draw low-ball, game wherein player position is crucial.
So what player position is best?
Well, as there is no one best poker strategy out there, there is also no position that can be attributed as 'best' for any and every circumstances as there are many factors to consider foremost of which is the betting rules that are in place in a particular game.
Generally though, it is more likely that you will be better off positioning last in the betting sequence as it will be very much easier for you to make calculated decisions when you are in the last position as you had already seen the actions of your opponents who have went through their turns before you.
Being in the last position also allows you to call freely without having the fear of someone raising after you. Players in positions other than the last are not that fortunate as they will always have to be cautious of calling because if the possibility of a raise from succeeding players.
Being first in a betting sequence is not that bad however as there are also some advantages in being the first in line. When first, one has more check raising opportunities than any other player position in the table. Driving opponents out of the game is also relatively easier to do as those who are playing first can raise at the immediate start of a betting round.
When compared in contrast with the last position though, the advantages of playing in the first position pale in contrast with that of the advantages provided by the former making the last position relatively better for any player.
Player position is most often neglected by players in their strategies which is unfortunate as analyzing player position opens up a whole slew of poker strategies and techniques which players can use to polish their play.
